Project Brief

Designed as part of my pre-thesis project in college, this project combines a few of my interests like history, architecture and illustration with the form of an interactive pop-up book.

This book begins by asking what makes a monument? Is it the material? the people? the structure? the place? it's history? Providing some information, context and clues, the premise is to let the reader decide if these stagnant yet evolving structures are significant monuments in their eyes.

Format of the book:

Illustrations for each structure are split into coloured and monochrome parts - colour representing the basic purpose of the structure that could possibly be monumental and/or relevant in current times. Each spread has an information card with a conceptual key in the pocket along with instructions to help the reader determine the importance of the structure and its monumental status, for themselves.

CHALLENGES & LEARNINGS
  • Having never attempted to make a pop-up book before, I learnt about paper construction and binding by trial and error through the course of this project.

  • Time management throughout this project had been a challenge due to my unfamiliarity with the form.

  • The subjective nature of the interactivity of the book required for the content to be free of my own biases
